MU student creates live streaming Web site

When most students get bored, they goof off—hop online, watch some reality TV, whatever. When MU student Junhua Guo gets bored, he creates a Web site.

He's just launched a video streaming site called Youlivetube.com. It looks suspiciously like YouTube, but instead of featuring pre-recorded videos, it shows the action as it happens. Web sites such as livestream.com and ustream.tv have already capitalized on this idea. Guo said he thought of his site about a year ago, but hadn't been able to get to it until now.

He said it took him a month to create the Web site, and it wasn’t hard.

“You just have to know CSS and Flash and HTML,” he shrugged.

He said the process would have taken him only a week if he didn’t have to work on getting his doctorate in geological sciences or take care of his family. He’s married and has two daughters, age two years and five months. Guo is from China, but has lived and studied in Columbia for four years. He’ll graduate in 2011.

For Guo, Youlivetube.com has just been a fun hobby. He’s not trying to turn it into a money-making machine. But he said he’d be happy to work with other students on the site as a team, if they wanted to offer up their time and Web expertise.

Guo said it would be cool if he could create an iPhone application for the site so that users could live stream video from their phones. He also says it would be cool if more people used the site, since he hasn’t had much time to get the word out.

He’s not sure when he’ll get to either of those aspirations, though.

“Right now, I have a lot of work to do,” he said, shaking his head.
